Wait: there is! Microchipping offers an extra layer of protection if your pet ever goes missing. Microchipping can facilitate a safe return home if your pet is ever picked up by animal control, shelter personnel, or a well-meaning individual. It is not, however, a replacement or substitute for a proper collar and ID tag. If you\u2019ve been wondering what all the fuss is about, we offer a few great reasons to microchip your pet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sounds Crazy, Right?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Microchips do not have an energy source and cannot transmit location data via GPS. The purpose of microchipping is to store a unique numeric identification code that is linked to you and your pet. The chip itself is only activated by a special handheld scanner that uses a radio wave to pick up the identification code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real and Effective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a scanner is placed over a microchip, the radiowave will display the chip\u2019s identification number on the scanner\u2019s screen. When entered into an online database, the manufacturer of the microchip is revealed. Steps are taken to contact them about the found pet. The chip company will provide the name and address of the pet owners.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One Small Glitch<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for pet microchips to work, pet owners must set up an account with the chip manufacturer. All of the owner\u2019s contact information will be stored under their account if their pet is ever scanned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, many pet owners miss this crucial step, which makes the entire endeavor ineffectual. Inserted just below the skin between the shoulder blades, the procedure mirrors the time and sensation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skycanyonanimalhospital.com\/blog\/connecting-pet-vaccinations-with-a-long-healthy-life\/\">routine vaccination<\/a>. It is quick and relatively painless. If you\u2019d prefer to have their chip implanted during a routine surgical procedure (such as a dental cleaning or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skycanyonanimalhospital.com\/services\/affordable-spay-neuter.html\"> spay\/neuter<\/a>), that is an option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Bits and Bobs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like we mentioned above, microchips cannot rival the importance of a snug-fitting collar and legible ID tag. However, these items can fall off accidentally (if they are scrambling under a fence or struggling to free themselves if caught on a branch) or be removed by others. In this instance, microchips are the one thing that stand between your pet and a permanent separation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you microchip your pet, you are adding an extra layer of protection between them and the unknown. Without a chip, and if their ID falls off, they could end up at a shelter, adopted by another family, or worse. Every year, lost or missing pets suffer terrible injuries from vehicles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skycanyonanimalhospital.com\/blog\/outdoor-pet-safety-tips-for-pet-owners\/\">fights with predators<\/a>, and disease.
